In the words of former First Lady Michelle Obama, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”
On this gorgeous, sunny Sunday (here in White Rock), I’d like to take a moment to recognize and champion the many wonderful, ambitious and successful women in optometry I have the pleasure of knowing and working with.
It’s not easy to start your own business. When I started mine more than seven years ago, I embarked on a journey filled with learning, challenges and some incredible opportunities.
I am privileged to know and work with a number of female ODs who shed their own limitations and ventured into business. It’s a decision that comes with sacrifices, tough lessons and, at times, self-doubt. But it is also incredibly rewarding.
It is that sense of empowerment that I also try to instil in the optometry staff I work with. Wherever we find ourselves – be it running a business or working for one – we have an opportunity to grow and to help others. For staff, working at an optometry clinic may not be their final professional destination, but it is nonetheless a chance to thrive and learn.
As astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison said, “Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world. It’s your life.”
Whether you work for someone else or are charting your own course in business, your creativity, curiosity and ideas have merit and value.
Happy International Women’s Day to the courageous women taking care of our eye health across the country and around the world. We appreciate you.
